Obituary

Caroline Stewert, 98, stepped into the presence of Jesus on October 2, 2026, after

an extended illness.

Caroline was born on March 6, 1928, to Isaac and Caroline Postill of the Shonkin

Mountains. She was the second of five children. She loved the outdoors as a child

and frequently explored the Shonkin Mountains with her brother Isaac. She

attended 1 st grade in Shonkin, then proceeded to attend school in Geraldine for a

couple of years. The remainder of her school years were in Fort Benton.

During her high school years, she procured a job selling popcorn at the Arnst

Movie Theater, which led to a job bookkeeping for the business. During summers,

she was a babysitter and employed as domestic help on a ranch out of Geraldine.

Following High School, she found employment as a bookkeeper in the Chouteau

County Assessor’s office.

It was at graduation from high school that Caroline agreed to date her classmate

Charles Stewart in 1946. They were married July 10, 1949. Caroline and Charles

moved to Missoula in order for Charles to complete his college degree. During

that time, she worked for the Athletic Director of the University of Montana.

Caroline and Charles moved back permanently to farm and ranch north of Fort

Benton in 1951. Because of her love of accounting and bookkeeping, she kept

books for the ranch into her nineties. In 1958, their first daughter Resa was born,

followed by Lila in 1960 and Glen in 1963. During her years of child raising, she

was known to provide many a meal to friends, neighbors, missionaries, and

strangers. She always welcomed anyone at her door to join for a meal. She and

Charles started the Russell Community Chapel, where she taught the children

Sunday School for many years. Through the years, they continued their

involvement in various Christian ministries in and outside of the community.

One of her great pleasures and accomplishments was to become a certified private

pilot in 1968. She was known to frequently fly for parts and ranch business needs.

When she retired from piloting, she had over 600 hours of flight time.

As her children grew into adulthood, she focused her time on developing

relationships with her grandchildren, traveling to celebrate birthdays and holidays,

attending school events, and being their encourager. She and Charles enjoyed

taking farm tours to Norway, Australia and New Zealand. They were finally able

to visit family in Scotland. She and Charles made frequent trips to Idaho and

Washington to see grandchildren.

In 2011, her husband passed after 62 years of marriage. She continued to be active

on the farm and ranch she loved. She was known to bake cookies for youth groups

of the Community Bible Church. She rarely missed a Sunday attending

Community Bible and connecting with her church family. Her positive attitude and

radiant smile were an encouragement for all.

Caroline was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; grandson, Patrick; sisters,

Gertrude Weishaar and Kathryn Woodburn; brother, Isaac Postill; and parents,

Isaac and Caroline Postill.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Postill; sister-in-law Mary Stewart; brother-in-

law John (Katya) Stewart; children, Resa (Wayne) Yamamoto, Lila (Garth) Good

of Chester, MT, Glen (Kathy) Stewart of Fort Benton, MT; grandchildren, Mari

Yamamoto, Hannah Yamamoto Doss, Isaac Yamamoto, Susanne Stewart Madill,

Lauren Sewart, Tyler Good, Erin Good, Dylan Good, five great grandchildren;

many nieces and nephews; her caregiver, Jennifer Jorge; and her church family.
