Decker
October 17, 1940 – July 4, 2020
Donald William Decker was born in Rock Elm, Wisconsin on October 17, 1940. Due to diabetic complications, he passed on July 4, 2020 at Great Falls Peace Hospice with his daughters and grandchildren near him. At his request, cremation has taken place.
Don came to Fort Benton, Montana area when he was the young age of about 5. He grew up in Fort Benton, being raised by his mother, Eva Sexton and his stepfather, William Sexton. He was unable to complete his high school education in Fort Benton because he was needed to work for the family finances. He began working at the Saint Clare Hospital, now named Missouri River Medical Center in 1961. It was in Fort Benton that he met his wife, Jo Ann (Jody) Hallenberg. They married in Fort Benton on March 8, 1962.
Don continued to live in Fort Benton for the rest of his life. During his lifetime he had three daughters he thought the world of. He worked at Missouri River Medical Center for 50+ years. He was also a devoted member of the First Lutheran Church. He was well known throughout Fort Benton as being a hardworking, gentle and caring man. During his lifetime, he enjoyed fishing and camping, antique hunting, old time country music, traveling and being with his family. His life was enhanced with the arrival of his grandchildren.
He was also thrilled travelling to many places on his bucket list with his daughters and grandchildren. Some of his best memories included going to the Grand Ole Opry (Nashville, TN) and to the museums of Gene Autry (Oklahoma) and Hank Williams Sr. (Alabama). His favorite of places to be were at The White Cliffs along the Missouri River, the Shonkin Mountains and Nashville Tennessee.
Don was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Sexton, his stepfather, William (Bill) Sexton, his three brothers, Byron Decker, Russell Decker and Fredrick Decker.
He is survived by his wife, Jody Decker (Fort Benton); his three daughters: Shannon Sykes (Fort Benton), Donna Hasbrouck (Fort Benton) and Cheri Hirst (Valier); his special nephew, Robert Decker (Florida); his sister Kathryn VanOmmen (Idaho); his six grandchildren: Alex Braunberger (New Mexico), Klayton Sykes (Highwood), Kristen Hirst (Valier), Adam Hirst (Valier), Brenna Hasbrouck (Great Falls) and Ty Hasbrouck (Fort Benton); and his 3 great grandsons, Ridgelyn, Rowan and Renton Braunberger (New Mexico). He also had several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Benton on Friday, July 17 at 10:30 am. All are welcome to join with the ability to maintain proper social distancing at the cemetery. Chairs will also be available for those who need them. Benton Funeral Home has been entrusted with services and arrangements.
