Mary was born Mary Jane Shingledecker on October 25, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Oscar and Frances and was their only child. Mary met and married Donald John Scott in 1948, who was stationed with the Army in San Antonio. As a young adult Mary focused on raising her children and taking care of the family home. Though short-lived, a dream of opening up a small dress shop in Fort Benton was fulfilled after her children were grown. She served as a Boy and Girl Scout leader for 25 years, was an active member of the Fort Benton Rebekah Lodge over four decades, was elected President of the Rebekah Assembly of Montana and a member of the Methodist Church. Her husband Don Scott passed away suddenly in 1997 and several years later Mary married Cecil Seright, whom she cared for until his death.
Mary had a green thumb, good sense of humor, liked playing darts and had fun treasure hunting. She enjoyed acts of service into her senior years, collecting hundreds of stuffed animals for Montana Special Olympics' athletes. She will be remembered by her grandchildren for her sewing skills, thoughtful Christmas gifts and laughter. Mother had a fondness for animals and would leave vegetables out for the rabbits that visited her yard. She later enjoyed the birds at the Bluff Apartments.
She is survived by 4 children and 12 grandchildren: Donald Robert (Barbara, 3), Margie (3), Raymond (Kathy, 4), Brian (Cheryl, 2); 24 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Edith Scott Wheatley; and extended family.
Mary's family is grateful to caregiver and friend "Diane with the purple hair," and nurse Brenda Price, who truly went above and beyond.
