Obituary

Melvin Ray "Red" Atkinson, 80, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at the Missouri River Nursing Home in Fort Benton, Montana. His graveside service will be noon Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Tim Wood officiating. Melvin was born May 28, 1942 in Plankinton, South Dakota to Harold and Myrtle (Cornelius) Atkinson. He entered into the National Guard 1961 and served 4 years. He married Clara Mia Rose 1963 in Chamberlain, South Dakota. The couple settled in Fort Benton, Montana and raised their two sons: Randy and Ross. Melvin and Clara were life members of  the Fort Benton Methodist Church. Melvin was a mechanic, he could fix just about anything. He worked for Ivan Konen at his tire shop in Fort Benton for many years and got to know many of the farmers in the area. He helped his son Ross operate R& A Tires for a few years.

Melvin was a member of Cub & Boy Scouts where he enjoyed teaching the the youth.  He enjoyed living in Fort Benton and the people of the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara in 2021, brother Tom Atkinson and sister Eileen.

Melvin is survived by his two sons: Randy (Maria) Atkinson and Ross Atkinson. Three Granddaughters: Bridget, Tabbitha, and Trista and one grandson Alexander.
