Phyllis Margaret Smith, 95, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2025, in Fort Benton, Montana. Cremation has taken place, and her Memorial Mass will be held in April at the Immaculate Conception Church, with her burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Benton, Montana. Phyllis was born February 20, 1929, to Joseph and Pauline (Burchak) Smith, the eldest of five children. She attended school in Fort Benton and graduated High School in 1947. She attended Montana State University for one year, and then worked in Spokane, Washington as a bank teller. She later attended the University of Great Falls and graduated with a degree in elementary education. She taught school in Great Falls and Standford, Montana for 26 years, living each summer in Fort Benton. She retired from Stanford and moved back to Fort Benton to help her folks.
Phyllis was very community involved, volunteering at the Fort Benton Museum and Interpretive Center for many years. She was involved in the garden club, very active in her church, attended many school and city functions and always attended the Chouteau County Fair and Summer Celebration! Phyllis attended the Immaculate Conception Church and served in many capacities over her lifetime. She enjoyed bowling and participated in league bowling for many years, she also enjoyed downhill skiing, reading mystery novels and nonfiction, gardening and traveling to Europe, Norway and Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Leslie, and Norman; sisters, Janet Stevens, and Joanne Smith; and niece Margaret Blair.
Phyllis survived by her sister-in-law, Donna Smith of Kalispell; nephews, Dan Smith of Kalispell, Eric Smith of Oregon, Tom Drube of Idaho, Dennis Drube of Bozeman and nieces, Julie S. Dickenson of Utah; Susan S. McAnally and Dawn S. Olson both of Kalispell.
